The standard
This site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. In practice, that means:
- Text meets the AA contrast ratios against its background.
- No text is smaller than 14 pixels, and body text is at least 17 pixels on a desktop and 16 pixels on a phone.
- Every link and button shows a visible outline when you reach it with the keyboard.
- If your device asks for reduced motion, nothing on the page animates.
- Decorative patterns and icons are hidden from screen readers, and the portrait has a text alternative.
How it is checked
Every time the site is published, automated checks run first. If any of them fails, the site is not published.
- The axe accessibility engine tests every page against the WCAG 2.1 A and AA rules, at a desktop width and a phone width, with every expandable section and the phone menu open.
- A readability check measures the text on the home page and on this page against the size floor above.
- Scripted browser tests use the keyboard alone. They move through each page with the Tab key, forwards and backwards, and confirm that every link and button shows a focus outline and is never hidden under the menu bar. They also open the phone menu with the keyboard, move through it, and close it with the Escape key.
- The same tests confirm that each page fits a screen 320 pixels wide with no sideways scrolling. They also check that every item in the phone menu can be reached on a screen 320 by 256 pixels, which is what a 1280 by 1024 screen shows at 400% zoom.
- Tests confirm that each page has one main heading, page landmarks, keyboard focus styles, a reduced-motion setting, and no requests to other websites.
Automated tools catch many problems, but not all of them. A script can show where keyboard focus goes, but not whether a person finds it easy to follow.
Known limits
- The site has not yet been tested with a screen reader.
- So far, all testing has been in Chromium, the engine behind Chrome and Edge. Safari and Firefox have not been tested.
- My résumé is offered as a PDF and as a Word document. If neither works well with your assistive technology, email me and I will send it in another format.
